Fall in New Jersey: Apple Picking, Pumpkin Patches & Farm Stands

September 12, 2026·Mahesh Sangisetty

There's a case to be made that New Jersey peaks in the fall. The humidity breaks, the hills in the northwest turn gold and red, and every other weekend there's an orchard, a pumpkin patch, or a cider-doughnut line worth standing in. It's one of the quiet reasons people love living here — and one of the things I always mention when someone's deciding which part of the state to call home.

Here's my local guide to the best NJ fall farms, organized by the counties I work. Each spot links to its map so you can check hours and hayride schedules before you go.

A note: fall hours, pick-your-own availability, and event dates change week to week (and with the weather) — always confirm on the farm's site before driving out.

Morris County & the Northwest: Orchard Country

If NJ apple picking has a heartland, it's the rolling hills of Morris County and just beyond.

  • Alstede Farms (Chester) — the big one: pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, and more across hundreds of acres, plus hayrides, a corn maze, and a farm market. Go early on weekends; it's popular for a reason.
  • Riamede Farm (Chester) — a classic, low-key pick-your-own apple orchard with a old-fashioned feel.
  • Ort Farms (Long Valley) — pumpkins, a corn maze, and a big fall festival atmosphere.
  • Wightman's Farms (Morristown) — apples, a market, and cider doughnuts close to town.

Bergen County: Close-In Fall Fun

For North Jersey families who don't want a long drive, Bergen County delivers:

  • Demarest Farms (Hillsdale) — apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, and a farm market, all remarkably close to the density of North Jersey.

Monmouth County: The Shore Does Fall Too

Down in Monmouth County, fall is just as big a deal as summer:

  • Battleview Orchards (Freehold) — pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, plus a bakery whose cider doughnuts have a serious following.
  • Delicious Orchards (Colts Neck) — more of a legendary farm market than a pick-your-own, and the fall spread is worth the trip.

Central Jersey: Middlesex & Mercer

  • Von Thun Farms (Monroe, Middlesex) — a full fall festival: pumpkin picking, a big corn maze, and family activities.
  • Terhune Orchards (Princeton, Mercer) — apples, pumpkins, a corn maze, and weekend festivals in the Princeton countryside.

South Jersey: Burlington County

A Few Local Tips

  • Go early, especially on weekends. The best farms fill their parking lots by mid-morning in October.
  • Check pick-your-own status first. Apple and pumpkin availability shifts with the harvest — a quick look at the farm's site (or a call) saves a wasted trip.
  • Cash + comfortable shoes. Some stands are cash-friendly, and the fields get muddy after rain.
  • Weekdays are the secret. A Tuesday-afternoon orchard visit is a completely different, calmer experience than a Saturday.

Why a Realtor Cares About Cider Doughnuts

Because the where of your life is made of weekends like these. When buyers ask me what a town is really like, "there's a great orchard 15 minutes away" is a more honest answer than any stat. The rhythm of a place — the summer shore trips, the fall farm runs, the downtown you walk on a Friday — is what turns a house into home.
